WITHIN two hours of last night's mildly embarrassing defeat by the ramshackle MLS All-Stars, Chelsea were on a charter flight heading home, their American tour behind them and pre-season clashes with Feyenoord and Celtic to come, on Tuesday and Wednesday in Rotterdam and London respectively. No matter. For all their lackadaisical failings against an ad-hoc team filleted by injuries, yesterday offered a glimpse into Chelsea's future.

The nimble Americans, who had trained together just twice, took advantage of Paulo Ferreira's unfamiliarity with his role and the otherwise excellent Los Angeles Galaxy dynamo Chris Albright missed horribly in the 39th minute when he clipped Richard Mulrooney's expert through ball inches wide of Carlo Cudicini's post.

In the 70th minute De Rosario collected Irishman Ronnie O'Brien's throw in, twisted around John Obi Mikel's challenge and, 20 yards out, beat Hilario on his near post.
